I have been fortunate to have so many great mentors and teachers. But, it took me too long to find them. I had to go looking, and look hard. The great ladies I know and love are not on dollar bills, they are not presidents, they are not even famous. They are scholars, writers and feminists who are changing student’s lives one book at a time.
Its not enough. Unless we address the fact that caregiving is undervalued, every year all these college educated women are going to go out and think that everything is okay, until they decide to have kids.
We have to do more to disseminate the truth about the value of caregiving, the cold reality of America’s social policies, and the social construction of the “good” mother in the context of a patriarchal, consumer society. I’m standing at the intersection of feminism and motherhood and “I’m in” Jocelyn Fenton Stitt – there, I said it!
